The lead consumption of lead-acid batteries in the United States accounts for over 95% of the total lead consumption in the country, but their lead emissions only account for 1.5% of their total emissions. In 2008, the US government excluded lead-acid battery production from major sources of lead pollution.






Academician Chen Hongyuan said that the increasingly widespread application of lead-acid battery products is due to their own advantages. Lead acid batteries are products with high safety, low cost, and high recycling capacity.






Experts attending the meeting analyzed that traditional lead-acid batteries are developing towards new types of batteries such as sealed, maintenance free, and colloidal batteries through technological improvements.






The pollution of lead-acid batteries may occur in three stages:






Firstly, in the production process, as the backbone enterprises mainly refer to large formal enterprises, strict control is exercised over the production of lead-acid batteries. The lead gas, lead dust, and wastewater generated during the production process are strictly discharged in accordance with standards, and basically do not pollute the environment;






Next is the usage process. As most lead-acid batteries, especially electric vehicle batteries, are strictly sealed and maintenance free, there is no need to recharge the battery from installation to the end of use. Therefore, they will not cause pollution to the environment during use;






The third step is recycling and treatment. Due to the significant economic value of lead recycling, many small businesses and workshops are willing to engage in lead-acid battery recycling work. However, small businesses often lack necessary recycling equipment and technology. During the recycling process, they often directly knock open the lead-acid battery, pour acid solution, and remove the lead plate, resulting in acid pollution. Therefore, the third link, which is the recycling and treatment of waste lead-acid batteries, must be highly valued.






On March 1st of this year, the national standard "Technical Specifications for Pollution Control of Waste Lead Acid Battery Treatment" formulated by the Ministry of Environmental Protection was officially implemented, which effectively promotes the healthy and orderly development of the waste lead battery recycling industry.






Some experts believe that in the industry of recycling waste lead-acid batteries, a better recycling mechanism should be established, that is, whoever produces should recycle them. At present, there are numerous small workshops in the waste lead-acid battery recycling industry, while large enterprises are facing the embarrassing situation of having no batteries to recycle. The best way to resolve this contradiction is for whoever produces to recycle, utilizing the company's sales network for recycling, and thoroughly solving the problem of recycling channels for large recycling enterprises.






The pollution focus of the lead-acid battery industry lies in small enterprises, "said Hao Jun, Deputy Secretary General of the China Electrical Equipment Industry Association. Xu Hong, Secretary General of the Lead Acid Battery Professional Committee of the China Electrotechnical Society, also pointed out that it is necessary to raise the industry entry threshold, eliminate small enterprises that are unable to invest in environmental protection through legal construction and strengthening administrative management, and promote the orderly and healthy development of the industry.






The report released by the China Battery Industry Association points out that the lead-acid battery industry will continue to grow at a relatively fast rate during the 12th Five Year Plan period. Research on improving the power characteristics of lead-acid batteries and reducing lead consumption is of great significance for reducing the cost of lead-acid batteries, saving energy and emissions, and conserving resources. Lead acid batteries will focus on developing new types of batteries such as valve controlled seals, colloids, wound batteries, bipolar batteries, super batteries, and lead carbon batteries, providing new battery products for power and energy storage; Promote the research and industrialization of lead reduction technology for lead-acid batteries; Eliminate open lead-acid batteries; Accelerate the technological transformation of lead-acid battery enterprises and recycled lead enterprises to achieve clean production.
