What is battery balanced charging?

The most common maintenance during the use of batteries is balanced charging. Balanced charging is essentially an overcharging of the battery. Balanced charging is still one of the solutions to address battery inconsistency. Due to the use in a series battery circuit, there may be differences between batteries, capacity differences, and voltage (terminal voltage) differences. In order to prevent the expansion of battery differences and the development of "outdated batteries" (faulty batteries), it is necessary to regularly perform balanced charging.

① In case of the following special circumstances, balanced charging should also be carried out.

a. The battery pack needs to supply power to the load separately for more than 15 minutes and requires balanced charging;

b. After deep discharge, if the battery capacity is insufficient, it needs to be charged evenly.

② The method of balanced charging depends on the situation that occurs

a. I hope to improve the characteristic parameters of the battery through balanced charging. In this case, the periodic full charging method can be chosen, and according to the usage regulations, the load should be charged once every six months. This can be automatically set on the charging device, and balanced charging will be automatically performed at that time. After a few hours of charging, it will switch to float charging mode, which can make up for the capacity of the "lagging battery".

b. I hope to recover the required capacity after discharge through balanced charging, which can be done using either full charging or incremental voltage charging (float charging followed by boost).

The time required for balanced charging (t) depends on factors such as the depth of battery discharge, the selected current limit value, the temperature of the battery, and the charging equipment.

The setting of current limiting charging values varies, usually ranging from 0.15-0.25CI. (A) Some countries also set it at 0.1C10 (A) or 0.3 C10 (A), and the charging time can be estimated based on the current limit value.

The time required for balanced charging should not be too long, as it may cause excessive surplus gas in the battery and affect the oxygen recombination efficiency; Moreover, it accelerates the corrosion rate of the positive grid and damages the battery. In addition, the charging voltage for balanced charging is higher than that for float charging, and the oxygen recombination efficiency inside the battery is highest under float charging voltage. The voltage of balanced charging already belongs to high-voltage charging. If the voltage increases by 10 mV, the float charging current will increase by 10 times, which will cause damage to the battery.

To reduce maintenance workload and minimize the number of balanced charging cycles, an effective method is to install a battery voltage balancer. This device enables each individual battery in the series circuit to achieve uniform and consistent charging. Depending on the health status of each individual battery, a float charging current is allocated to the battery, with less float charging current for those with sufficient battery capacity and more float charging current for those with insufficient battery capacity. This will prevent each individual battery in the series circuit that has been working on float charging for a long time from experiencing "undercharging" or "overcharging", greatly improving the uniformity of each individual battery in the series circuit, enhancing the performance of the battery pack, and ensuring that each battery in the battery pack is always in its optimal working state.
